SUMMARY:9th Balkan Botanical Congress
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to participate in the IX Balkan botanical congress\, which will be held from 8 to 12 October 2026 in Podgorica\, Montenegro\, organized by the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts\, the University of Montenegro\, and the Natural History Museum of Montenegro (more information: https://canu.me/\, https://www.ucg.ac.me/\, https://pmcg.co.me/).\n\n\nPodgorica\, the capital of Montenegro\, is the country’s largest urban center\, recognizable for its rivers and sunlit landscapes\, where rich natural heritage harmoniously intertwines with a contemporary urban spirit\, creating an inspiring setting for scientific dialogue and international cooperation. Situated at the transition between Mediterranean and continental climate zones\, it is characterized by a remarkable diversity of landscapes and ecosystems. Owing to its outstanding natural values and rich biodiversity\, four protected areas stand out within its territory – Nature park “Komovi”\, Nature park “Zeta River”\, Natural Monument “Park Forest Gorica” and Natural Monument “Cave Magara” (see more: https://podgorica.me/\, https://www.auzp.me/zasticena-podrucja/).\n\n\nThe aim of organizing the IX Balkan botanical congress is to bring together scientists\, researchers\, and experts from the region and beyond\, in order to exchange the latest knowledge in the field of botany and related disciplines\, including mycology . The Congress seeks to strengthen regional and international cooperation\, encourage interdisciplinary research\, and promote joint initiatives in the study and conservation of plant diversity in the Balkans.\n\n\nThe program of the Congress includes tree lecture days that will allow plenary\, oral and poster presentations\, social events\, and two excursions – mid-congress and a post-congress field trip.

SUMMARY:Mission Urban Mushrooms: Identification Hackathon
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, 15 October\, join fungal enthusiasts\, citizen scientists\, and mycologists across Europe for a special online Identification Hackathon as part of the FunDive campaign! Our goal is simple: improve and verify as many fungal observation records as possible from our Mission Urban Mushrooms project on iNaturalist: inaturalist.org/projects/mission-urban-mushrooms \n\nGoogle Meet Link: meet.google.com/rqd-gtng-yas \n\nTwo ways of joining the event: \n1️⃣ Join our Live Online Meeting (9:00 – 15:00 CET): Drop in anytime to collaborate with fellow identifiers\, ask questions\, and help solve tricky mushroom IDs together! \n2️⃣ Identify Individually: Can’t make the call? Join the project on iNaturalist and review observation records independently whenever you have time throughout the day!

SUMMARY:9th FunDive Webinar: Deadwood in FunDive - WP4 preliminary results
DESCRIPTION:The FunDive consortium presents its recurrent webinar series on mycological topics.\nThis ninth webinar will explore deadwood fungal ecology and preliminary findings from FunDive Work Package 4 (WP4). Deadwood expert and consortium leader Prof. Dr. Jacob Heilmann-Clausen will introduce the ecological importance of deadwood and the factors shaping fungal diversity. Dr. Franziska Richter and Glen Dierickx will then present preliminary WP4 results from deadwood eDNA analyses and fruitbody-based sampling\, respectively. \nThe webinar will last about one hour\, including time for questions. \nPlease note that webinars are recorded and will be shared afterwards via the FunDive website. Please sign up [registration link] so we can keep track of the number of participants and adjust accordingly. You will receive an email with the join link. The webinar is hosted on Microsoft Teams. \nSchedule \n19:55 Opening and short introduction  (Dr. Marta Tischer and Glen Dierickx)\n20:00 – Introduction to deadwood fungal ecology – Prof. Dr. Jacob Heilmann-Clausen\n20:20 – Exploring fungal diversity in deadwood using eDNA: Preliminary results from WP4 – Dr. Franziska Richter\n20:30 – Investigating deadwood fungi through fruitbody-based sampling: Preliminary results from WP4 – Glen Dierickx\n20:40 – Discussion and questions\n21:00 End \nIf you cannot find the meeting link or have lost your invitation email\, the direct link will be posted here shortly before the start.\nIf you have issues please reach out via glen.dierickx@ugent.be \nExtended topic description \nProf. Dr. Jacob Heilmann-Clausen (University of Copenhagen) will introduce the ecology of deadwood-associated fungi\, highlighting the environmental and ecological factors that shape fungal diversity and the role of deadwood in biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration. His presentation will provide the ecological context for the preliminary findings from FunDive WP4 (Sampling Fungal Communities by Environmental DNA). \nDr. Franziska Richter will present preliminary results from eDNA analyses of Pinus deadwood samples collected within the FunDive project. She will explore the fungal communities detected in deadwood and compare these findings with those obtained from soil samples\, highlighting similarities and differences between the two substrates. \nGlen Dierickx will present complementary results from fungal fruitbodies collected on deadwood and sampled using an approach analogous to eDNA sampling. His presentation will explore how these fruitbody-based samples contribute to our understanding of deadwood-associated fungal diversity and complement the eDNA findings.
