SUMMARY:9th FunDive Webinar: Deadwood in FunDive - WP4 preliminary results
DESCRIPTION:The FunDive consortium presents its recurrent webinar series on mycological topics.\nThis ninth webinar will explore deadwood fungal ecology and preliminary findings from FunDive Work Package 4 (WP4). Deadwood expert and consortium leader Prof. Dr. Jacob Heilmann-Clausen will introduce the ecological importance of deadwood and the factors shaping fungal diversity. Dr. Franziska Richter and Glen Dierickx will then present preliminary WP4 results from deadwood eDNA analyses and fruitbody-based sampling\, respectively. \nThe webinar will last about one hour\, including time for questions. \nPlease note that webinars are recorded and will be shared afterwards via the FunDive website. Please sign up [registration link] so we can keep track of the number of participants and adjust accordingly. You will receive an email with the join link. The webinar is hosted on Microsoft Teams. \nSchedule \n19:55 Opening and short introduction  (Dr. Marta Tischer and Glen Dierickx)\n20:00 – Introduction to deadwood fungal ecology – Prof. Dr. Jacob Heilmann-Clausen\n20:20 – Exploring fungal diversity in deadwood using eDNA: Preliminary results from WP4 – Dr. Franziska Richter\n20:30 – Investigating deadwood fungi through fruitbody-based sampling: Preliminary results from WP4 – Glen Dierickx\n20:40 – Discussion and questions\n21:00 End \nIf you cannot find the meeting link or have lost your invitation email\, the direct link will be posted here shortly before the start.\nIf you have issues please reach out via glen.dierickx@ugent.be \nExtended topic description \nProf. Dr. Jacob Heilmann-Clausen (University of Copenhagen) will introduce the ecology of deadwood-associated fungi\, highlighting the environmental and ecological factors that shape fungal diversity and the role of deadwood in biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration. His presentation will provide the ecological context for the preliminary findings from FunDive WP4 (Sampling Fungal Communities by Environmental DNA). \nDr. Franziska Richter will present preliminary results from eDNA analyses of Pinus deadwood samples collected within the FunDive project. She will explore the fungal communities detected in deadwood and compare these findings with those obtained from soil samples\, highlighting similarities and differences between the two substrates. \nGlen Dierickx will present complementary results from fungal fruitbodies collected on deadwood and sampled using an approach analogous to eDNA sampling. His presentation will explore how these fruitbody-based samples contribute to our understanding of deadwood-associated fungal diversity and complement the eDNA findings.

SUMMARY:6th FunDive Webinar: Beyond the Microscope - Laboulbeniomycetes
DESCRIPTION:The FunDive consortium presents its recurrent webinar series on mycological topics.\nThis sixth webinar will be given by Danny Haelewaters who introduces us to the world and study of Laboulbeniomycetes. Marta Tischer and Glen Dierickx)\n20:00 Danny Haelewaters —  Beyond the Microscope: Phylogenetics and Phylogenomics Transforming\nthe Study of Laboulbeniomycetes?\n21:40 Discussion and questions\n21:00 End \nIf you cannot find the meeting link or have lost your invitation email\, the direct link will be posted here shortly before the start. \nExtended topic description \nDanny Haelewaters ( Laboratory of Fungal Ecology and Evolution\,  Institute of Entomology\, Czechia and Research Group Mycology at Ghent University\, Belgium). \nThe talk will focus on Laboulbeniales microfungi. Traditionally\, their study depended solely on morphological characteristics. Our group is using phylogenetics and phylogenomics to resolve outstanding issues such as species delimitation\, classification within the order Laboulbeniales\, and placement of the class among Ascomycota. For example\, the discovery of cryptic diversity and within-species phenotypic plasticity makes the use of molecular data necessary in species delimitation. Multi-locus phylogenetic data are showing that the fly-associated genus Stigmatomyces in its traditional sense is paraphyletic and falls apart in multiple clades. And finally\, phylogenomic data reveal that Laboulbeniomycetes and Sordariomycetes are not sister classes\, as previously shown (based on both ribosomal-only and six-locus phylogenetic data).

SUMMARY:One Health Mycology: The Westerdijk Spring Symposium 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute has announced the Westerdijk Spring Symposium 2026\, taking place April 13 to 14\, 2026. This year’s event centres on the interdisciplinary theme “One Health Mycology” and will explore the interconnectedness of fungal life across human\, animal\, and environmental domains. \nHosted at the Institute’s facilities in the Netherlands\, the symposium will gather leading scientists to present recent advances across four themes: \n\nHuman and Animal Health\nFungi Beyond Disease: plant pathogens\, microbiomes\, mycotoxins\, and indoor fungi\nEnvironmental Mycology: reservoirs\, dispersal\, and drivers of emergence\nAntifungal Resistance and Novel Antifungals\n\nA significant highlight of the event will be the celebration of Prof. Rob Samson’s 80th Birthday\, which will be honoured through a special session featuring talks on Aspergillus taxonomy\, and a retrospective look at his contributions to the field. The symposium will also host the Westerdijk Awards\, which recognises excellence in mycological research. \nThe event aims to foster international collaboration and provide a platform for researchers and industry professionals to tackle global health challenges through the lens of mycology. \nFor further information on the symposium and to secure your place\, see the following link.
