6th FunDive Webinar: Beyond the Microscope – Laboulbeniomycetes
June 30 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The FunDive consortium presents its recurrent webinar series on mycological topics.
This sixth webinar will be given by Danny Haelewaters who introduces us to the world and study of Laboulbeniomycetes.
The webinar will last about one hour, including time for questions.
Please note that webinars are recorded and will be shared afterwards via the FunDive website. Please sign up [registration link] so we can keep track of the number of participants and adjust accordingly. You will receive an email with the join link. The webinar is hosted on Microsoft Teams.

Extended topic description
Danny Haelewaters ( Laboratory of Fungal Ecology and Evolution, Institute of Entomology, Czechia and Research Group Mycology at Ghent University, Belgium).
The talk will focus on Laboulbeniales microfungi. Traditionally, their study depended solely on morphological characteristics. Our group is using phylogenetics and phylogenomics to resolve outstanding issues such as species delimitation, classification within the order Laboulbeniales, and placement of the class among Ascomycota. For example, the discovery of cryptic diversity and within-species phenotypic plasticity makes the use of molecular data necessary in species delimitation. Multi-locus phylogenetic data are showing that the fly-associated genus Stigmatomyces in its traditional sense is paraphyletic and falls apart in multiple clades. And finally, phylogenomic data reveal that Laboulbeniomycetes and Sordariomycetes are not sister classes, as previously shown (based on both ribosomal-only and six-locus phylogenetic data).
